How Big is a Fat Quarter?

Our Fat Quarters are usually a quarter of a metre - 50cm x half width of fabric.

Most of the fabrics we stock on bolts are 110cm wide.  However the Gutermann fabrics are slightly wider at approx. 146cm.

The Fat Quarter bundles that we sell from from The Craft Cotton Company are in USA sizing and are 45cm x 55cm. This is indicated on the product details and The Craft Cotton Company labels.

How much do I need to order?

The above diagram is to illustrate how a metre of fabric can be divided up.

  • Square A = one fat quarter 50cm x half width of fabric bolt.
  • Square B = one fat quarter 50cm x half width of fabric bolt.
  • Squares A plus B = two fat quarters - half a metre of fabric - order 2 fat quarters to get this.
  • Oblong C = one long quarter - 25cm x full width of fabric.
  • A plus B plus C = three quarters of a metre of fabric - order 3 fat quarters to get this.
  • Oblong D = one long quarter - 25cm x full width of fabric.
  • A plus B plus C plus D = one metre of fabric x full width of fabric - order 4 fat quarters to get this.
